Have eco cars lost their 'sex appeal'?

Are the benefits of owning and driving an environmentally friendly car beginning to wear off already? Following recent research from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) it was found that nearly half of motorists surveyed would not consider a more eco-friendly car even if the associated road tax charges were reduced.

The study found that 48 per cent of the 2,000 motorists surveyed would still shun an eco car even if their road tax liability was cut even further. Currently the cheapest three bands of road tax (A to C) range from nothing to £20 and £30 respectively – a very modest amount by most people’s standards – and it is surprising that the attraction of next to no road tax charges isn’t turning people’s heads.

Perhaps it is down to a lack of education for some drivers; with 22 per cent of motorists surveyed believing that driving has zero impact on global warming.

Simon Best, IAM chief executive, said: "Eco-friendly vehicles haven’t got the appeal so far, so motorists are willing to pay higher costs in VED to compromise. Motorists aren’t full convinced of how low CO2 emissions are beneficial to them, or society.

"While more can be done to increase awareness about the benefits of eco cars, drivers can do their bit by changing to green driving to help reduce CO2. Looking ahead and anticipating hazards will mean less stopping and starting and a smoother journey."

With the cost of eco friendly cars still somewhat high, many UK drivers simply cannot afford to make the transition from a conventional fuel powered car to an electric or hybrid model.

For those looking to maintain a cheap cost of driving with their fuel powered vehicle you may wish to consider our guaranteed used car parts here at ASM Auto Recycling. We proudly support the used car parts market as there are so many easily recycled parts from end-of-life and damage repairable vehicles that can be re-used and fitted into working cars.

Certainly if you know your way under a car bonnet it is a genuine cost-effective solution, or you could always purchase a used car part from us and get your local garage to fit it for you – rather than paying full price for a brand new part from a dealership.
