Traffic light numbers cause traffic congestion

The number of traffic lights on the UK’s roads has multiplied by almost 30 per cent in the last decade. A new report reveals the increase between 2000 and 2008 with the amount of traffic lights in London alone increasing to more than 6,000 throughout the City.

A spokesman for the RAC Foundation, who conducted the report, revealed there are now over 25,000 traffic lights situated on the nation’s highways.

One in three motorists believe maintenance checks are ‘not necessary’

A third of the nation’s motorists believe that it is not necessary to carry out basic maintenance checks on their vehicle on a regular basis, a Sainsbury’s car insurance survey said.

As many as 21 per cent of motorists do not deem monthly vehicle checks important, amounting to 7.2 million UK motorists that hit Britain’s highways on a daily basis.

Motorists to face £6 a gallon at the pump

The soaring cost of oil due to the unrest in Libya is set to hit UK motorists further with many petrol stations across the country now charging £6 a gallon.

The price is only likely to rise with the continuing leadership crisis in Libya. Industry experts predict that motorists will pay as much as 10 pence per litre more after Easter, with the Government also set to raise fuel duty.

Mayor of London demands cut in motoring taxes

Campaigners for a fuel stabiliser will have been surprised to receive the backing of the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson over the Government’s rising motoring costs.

Writing in his regular Daily Telegraph column, Johnson has increased pressure on Prime Minister David Cameron and is the most senior Conservative to date to call a halt to the ‘war’ on motorists.

Tesco teams up with big-name tyre supplier

Supermarket giant Tesco has revealed it has agreed a deal with a big-name tyre supplier, offering savings of up to 40 per cent for UK motorists.

Tesco’s move into the tyre market could potentially challenge established suppliers such as Kwik Fit and Associated Tyre Specialists. The retailer has teamed up with Blackcircles.com, a tyre specialist company run by former Tesco worker Mike Welch, with discounts that could blow competitors out of the water.
