Motorists ‘fed up’ with state of Britain’s roads

Motorists are ‘fed up’ with the condition of Britain’s roads and rising fuel prices and insurance premiums. That is the view of Motors.co.uk following a survey which revealed 82 per cent of drivers were disgruntled with the cost of motoring, endless postholes and continued roadworks.

According to the survey a third of motorists are making an effort to decrease their driving time, while three-quarters feel that the latest Government policies including the Fuel Duty cuts are not supporting them financially at the wheel.

Phil Jones of Motors.co.uk said: “UK consumers are under increasing pressure. However the frustration over roadworks and poor state of the roads shows that it’s not just economic factors that are forcing motorists to use their car less.

“For many people, driving is not a choice but a necessity and if the economy is to recover the Government needs to get back on the side of the motorist and support economic and social mobility.”

The Government pledged £100 million for pothole aid back in March but the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) revealed it would cost the Government up to £8.3 billion to restore the nation’s roads to good health.

Many motorists have been stung by pothole damage to their vehicle which can set them back hundreds of pounds in repair costs. There is also the very real potential for poor road surfaces to cause serious road incidents that could write off expensive vehicles.

End-of-life vehicles are required to be processed in accordance with the European ELV Directive. At ASM Auto Recycling not only does our vehicle dismantling department aid the ‘green’ de-pollution process it also enables our used car parts section to expand, with thousands of recycled parts available to purchase for cost-effective replacements.

Harsh early-winter weather and spending cutbacks cause poor UK road conditions

The RAC is growing increasingly concerned at the way in which local councils are being forced to undertake short-term road repairs following the harsh early-winter weather.

Following a recent survey, 11 of the 20 UK councils reported that their roads have been left in a poor or unpredictable condition with an increasing number of councils reporting lifting and cracking road surfaces.

The Government’s spending cuts saw road maintenance budgets slashed, with one urban council in particular seeing a £5.8 million reduction and an £160 million backlog in road repairs.

RAC motoring strategist Adrian Tink said: “It’s been a tough year for both the roads and the local councils manfully trying to repair them. Both have suffered from a harsh winter and budget cuts.

“The reality is that we’re left with a downward spiral of worsening road surfaces and councils playing catch-up with fewer resources to do the job. In that situation it is understandable that councils are opting for cheaper but more short-term repairs to the road surface.”

The difficulty for many road users is that potholes and lifting road surfaces creates an increasing number of hazards, heightening the potential for accidents and car breakdowns. In the current economic climate it is increasingly frustrating for road users to have to fork out costs for premium car parts.

That’s why the used car parts industry has grown in popularity ten-fold. If you know your way around a car or know someone capable of fitting car parts for you, you will be attracted to used car parts that are cost-effective, road-tested and cleaned. At ASM Auto Recycling our extensive used car parts department also offers a 90-day guarantee on all parts for damage-repairable vehicles.

Government to pledge £100 million for pothole aid

The Department for Transport (DfT) has moved to pledge £100 million to local authorities in a bid to tackle the nation’s growing pothole problem.

Transport secretary Philip Hammond revealed the funding will be distributed in addition to the £831 million already divvied out to councils for road maintenance in 2011.

Mr Hammond said: “Millions of motorists across the country have their daily drives ruined by potholes. And the awful winter weather we had this year is only going to make that problem worse.

“That is why, despite the tough financial position we are in, we are going to give councils over £100 million extra to help carry out much needed repairs to England’s roads.”

Despite fresh funding, the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) believes it will cost the Government a total of £8.3 billion to restore every single road. Potholes have the potential to cause major damage to vehicles even at low speeds.

Instead of footing the bill for brand new car parts you may choose to purchase and fit recycled used car parts available at a fraction of the price and have been tested and restored to legal roadworthy standards.

At ASM Auto Recycling we aim to supply motorists with used car parts for almost any vehicle. We store over 2,000 damaged-repairable and salvage cars in our ‘Christmas Tree’ racking system, enabling easy identification and reducing the likelihood of any damage to on-site vehicles.

With such a wide selection of makes and models stocked, ranging from vintage VW Polos to contemporary Porsches, we are confident you will find a solution to your motoring problem. Our breakers yard deals with dismantling end-of-life vehicles for recycling parts. Each part is covered by a 90-day guarantee giving motorists peace of mind.
