Environmental Sustainability

Shifting gears towards greener roads slogan

We are proud and excited to continue our sustainability journey at ASM.

As part of our environmental goals, we are committed to achieving Net Zero by 2040, 10 years ahead of the United Nations and the Paris Agreement’s deadline to ensure the world doesn’t exceed global temperature rises of 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. We will continue to monitor our on-site usage and disclose our scope 1 & 2 emissions, with our scope 3 emissions baseline being measured in 2024.

Our efforts will be influenced by the latest climate science and we will continue to strive for sustainable progression within the environmental services and waste management sector. We will work with the e2e group as well as our local community and councils, aligning our goals with those of national government, the community and the wider industry.

Science Based Target initiative

ASM Auto Recycling has set near-term company-wide emission reduction targets in line with climate science with the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi). The SBTi has approved ASM Auto Recycling’s near-term science-based emissions reduction target, to reduce absolute scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions 42% by 2030 from a 2022 base year, and to measure and reduce its scope 3 emissions.

“ASM Auto Recycling commits to reduce scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030 from a 2022 base year, and to measure and reduce its scope 3 emissions.”

Utilising what nature provides

In 2023, ASM Auto Recycling installed extensive solar PV on a new 40,000 sq. ft. workshop and office building, which is now powered entirely by our on-site solar.

The hope is to continually monitor our solar output to extend the usage throughout the site including charging our electric machinery and future fleet. Diversifying ASM’s vehicle fleet is being actively considered and will be incorporated when and where possible. Electric machinery is already used on site, including a new state-of-the-art car baler.

A rainwater harvesting system is also in use to further support the company’s increasing on-site water requirements, including staff toilets in the main office. Further rainwater harvesting systems are planned throughout the site for cleaning vehicles and additional staff utilities in the new warehouse.

Circularity and Resource Management

At ASM, we are collaborating with our suppliers and local businesses to support and promote a local circular economy. As part of our combined efforts to move closer to ‘zero waste’, we partner with other local businesses to ensure that waste items can be diverted from disposal or recycling for reuse within our operations.

Our reused or repurposed items include discarded cardboard boxes which we shred on-site for our packaging. Wooden pallets, which would otherwise be disposed of, are used within our parts warehouse. The pallets are used for shipping larger green car parts or remodelled into containers for use around our depot.

We have now replaced our plastic packaging tape with a paper alternative, eliminating an entire stream of single use plastic from our supply chain. Additionally, within all our offices, there are recycling facilities and all employees are educated and encouraged to recycle what they can to reduce waste where possible.

Efficiency

Optimising efficiency is key to lowering our emissions and an evolving part of our on-site operations to become more environmentally sustainable.

ASM Auto Recycling has recently undergone a £5 million investment programme to restructure its main site. This will help us facilitate the processing of vehicles even more efficiently and effectively, whilst simultaneously enhancing the on-site experience for both our customers and staff.

In practice, this means

  • Installation of LED and motion-sensor lighting throughout offices and workshops
  • New vehicle preparation facilities, fully powered by renewable energy generated on site
  • Increased warehousing capacity for an EV workshop and storage of salvaged vehicle parts
  • New logistics and auction offices all with associated IT enhancements

We are also annually reviewing our policies and systems to ensure we are striving for the most efficient ways of working.
